Sunday Night with the Scribes is an evening spent in the company of other Scribal Arts folks from around the Known World. Whether you’re here to learn a skill, share your success or simply hang out with your Art friends, there is room at the table for you. Come for the Community, Stay for the Art!

University of Atlantia Hybrid Session, Saturday (in-person) and Sunday (online), June 14 and 15, 2025

Spike’s travels have led him throughout the Known World already. He comes home to Atlantia for an in person day of classes on Saturday, June 14th. Spike started his University journey 45 years ago in the Barony of Marinus and that is where he celebrating his milestone this year! Spike is looking to plan some extra special classes with guest instructors, long requested subjects, and

The next hybrid session of the University of Atlantia will take place Saturday in Marinus (Virginia Beach, VA) on Saturday, June 14, 2025 & Sunday, June 15, 2025!

It is the last Sunday of the month so come and work along other scribes, ask questions, bring ideas, show off your work and art!

Sun., Apr. 6–Cutting a quill from bird to ink with L’Honorable Seigneur Baudouin de Domrémy
We will discuss every aspect of quill feather calligraphy, from finding the right feather, curing the quill techniques (what works, and how to screw it up) cutting the nib, and advantages to using a quill – plus possible problems. If you have any cured feathers, bring them and a sharp knife to work along with the instructor.

Sun., Apr. 13–Introduction to Flat Gilding with Hellen of Haldane
Flat gilding is the easiest form of gilding.  We will review some basic methods and tools and then try a hands on class….. Supplies:  Real gold patent leaf, PVA glue, glue stick, glassine, eyeglass cleaner or silk or cotton ball, hotpress or smooth paper, fine brush.

Sun., Apr. 27–Pigments in Manuscripts of the Global Middle Ages with Magnifica Beatrice Domenici della Campana
Illuminated manuscripts were not the sole province of the European Middle Ages, with examples of decorated “books” spanning much of the globe in the SCA’s time period.  We will look at a selected  few examples from across the world, through the lens of scientific analysis of the pigments and inks used to create such beauty.
