Events and Classes—One Time

Intro. to New World Textiles through the Lens of the Quechua-speaking Communities of Cusco, Peru, Mon., 5-12-25, 7:00pm Eastern (6pm Central), hosted virtually on Zoom—taught by Dame Eilidh Swann, OP, Caid

Join us for the Huapahua Period America Lecture Series, a monthly invitation to explore the indigenous history of North, South and Central America within SCA period!

Andean Backstrap Weaving – This weaving system is the basis for pre-conquest era, conquest-era, and post-conquest weaving (pre-1500s and later) in what is now the Cusco region of Peru. This weaving has roots in history that spans several eras in the region (including Nasca, Wari, and Incan weavers) and introduces students to a wealth of weaving, spinning, and natural dye opportunities.

What you might not know is that these traditions have been kept alive since the conquest era, against all efforts of completely eradicating this history. The master weavers in the Quechua-speaking communities passed down their cultural identity textiles for centuries (by word of mouth). And in modern days, they are continuing to keep the traditions alive as well as doing their own revival of “lost techniques” in the past several decades (especially during the pandemic hard lockdown years).

Dame Eilidh Swann never originally expected to bring her studies of Andean textiles into her SCA reenactment. But having studied weaving with Abby Franquemont (author of “Respect the Spindle”) since 2017, she has been part of the online instruction in current day Andean Backstrap Weaving. But from the SCA point of view, Eilidh has also recently been researching what we can learn about conquest-era contact and how the extant textiles in museums and the first-person accounts published in 1615 give evidence that the stories passed down amongst the weavers can be recognized in the historical record.

Lyondemere Virtual Arts & Sciences Night, Friday, May 16, 2025, 9-11pm
This month’s class is: Dining with the Sultan: A Look at 15th & 16th Century Ottoman Cuisine. Turkey only came into being in 1923. Before that, the various Turkic peoples inhabited Central Asia, gradually moving westward as the Seljuks of Persia and then the Ottomans of Anatolia. This fully illustrated discussion covers the development of Ottoman cuisine from Central Asia to the Mediterranean. Teacher is Mu’alima Urtatim al-Qurtubiyya bint ‘abd al-Karim al-hakam al-Fasi, OL. Please join the event at this link in order to get all class updates and Zoom links.

Workshop Safety: Practical Love Demonstration, Tues., May 20, 2025, 7pm Central—Knut Bjornsson
In this class, Thegn Knut teaches the basics of workshop safety for power tools and hand tools, with practical demonstration using food as an analogue for realistic injuries. Be safe; have fun; make things. The Zoom link will be in the comments of the post attached to the link above. The Zoom links are usually posted around 3pm Central the evening of the class.

Pennsic 101 Online Class, Third and Final Class, NEXT Sunday, May 18, 2025, at 3-5pm Eastern (2-4pm Central), Lady Jenna Childslayer
***Class will not be recorded.***

You want to go to Pennsic! Everyone you talk to makes it sound like so much fun… but you’ve never done anything like this, so… now what do you do?

Come to Pennsic 101 on Sunday 5/18/25 at 3 pm (Eastern) to find out! (Those with Pennsic experience are very welcome – I don’t know everything, plus I’ve had 40+ year veterans learn something new in this class!)

The class will be held ONLINE via Google Meet. Class link will be posted the day before. You do not need a Google account to attend, just click the link like you would for Zoom. If you are joining more than 5 minutes late and are in the waiting room, please be patient, they’ll get to you ASAP.

Pennsic is a wonderful SCA event and attending this class will help you to both prepare and have the best time possible… We will discuss how to prepare for Pennsic, what you will need to do and bring. We will answer questions you may have on how to manage to get your things to Pennsic and what you can expect when you finally get there and get set up. If you have garb you’ve already made and are not sure it’s Pennsic-ready, bring it. We can help you decide.

I look forward to seeing you there! YIS, Lady Jenna Childslayer, Class Hostess

Students will leave with an understanding of the order and direction of strokes and how slight changes to the order result in a variety of letters.

Those wishing to participate in the hands-on portion should print the worksheets (sized for a 3.8 mm nib) ahead of class.  The link will be found in the meeting invite.

Supplies: Handouts (will be emailed to those who register) and 3.5mm marker or nib and holder (a 3.8 Pilot Parallel Pen will also work).
